Lin Tianmiao, Bound and Unbound (2012)

Lin Tianmiao's body of work involves wrapping everyday objects with thread.  By completely covering the objects' surface with string, Lin removes the utilitarian function from the objects, thus making them all equal.  Her medium of choice, thread, alludes to the traditional thought that women should remain in the household and, in China, master arts such as embroidery and stitching.  In Bound and Unbound, a thread is used to obscure an object's appearance by overlapping and tangling with itself, rather than represent the object by using straight, pristine stitchwork as seen in Chinese embroidery. Through her work, Lin suggests all social issues are intertwined with one another, emphasizing a message about the dire effects gender inequality has on both sexes.
