Environmental Art and Earthwork
China is notorious for its high pollution levels brought on by industrialization and the manufacturing industry. Artists use their work as an outlet to express their dissatisfaction and frustrations with China's treatment of their environment, allowing the viewer to contemplate for themselves the risks and rewards of globalization.
Earthwork is defined by MoMA Learning as the "artistic manipulation of the natural landscape." Maya Lin uses her knowledge of physics and the natural sciences to inspire her own manipulation of the environment around her, creating works that she co-creates with nature, allowing it to adapt and work around her pieces.
