Wang Guangyi, Great Criticism: Coca Cola (1994)
Wang's Great Criticism series combines state propaganda with symbols of capitalism and the commercial industry to demonstrate how communism has been taken over by consumerism in China after Gaige kaifang, or China's "reform and opening up" to the outside world. The three strong laborers extended a pen exemplify the ideal Chinese citizen shown in many of the state's propaganda: strong, young soldiers ready to stand up for their beliefs. Wang draws a contrast between these soldiers and the commercial industry, demonstrating that they are not meant to be factory workers in China's new economy. By arguing an incompatibility between communist ideals and the ideals of large corporations, Wang proves how easily advertising can become propaganda.
