Cai Guo-Qiang, Sky Ladder (2015)

Cai Guo-Qiang's lifelong dream has been to create Sky Ladder, a ladder made out of fireworks that extends up to the sky, suspended by a hot air balloon.  Everybody Cai consulted about the project told him it was impossible, and for years it seems as though they were right.  Every attempt he made to get Sky Ladder off the ground was canceled, whether it was because the weather wasn't right or the government of his chosen location was uneasy about the scope of the work.  After years of research, Cai was finally able to produce Sky Ladder on a remote island in China early in the morning, in secret.  1,650 feet tall, Sky Ladder is made of a special type of fireworks that remains lit long after it is initially ignited.  Cai dedicated Sky Ladder to his 100-year-old grandmother, who passed way one month after Sky Ladder took place.
